Engagement

An engaging life is a joy-filled life, not to be confused with frenetic activity or back-to-back social engagements. An engaged life is the state of being fully absorbed in the business of being alive. It’s maintaining an active interest in the world, taking on a challenging project and staying connected.

It’s not always easy to stay engaged. We’re frequently distracted by television, Facebook, video games, and the Internet to name a few that take us from the business of focusing with joy on our own lives. When we are distracted and entertained by social media, for instance, we are observers of others’ lives rather than living our own.

To be fully engaged means that you occupy  your time with things you love to do, live in the moment, and are completely focused on whatever you have set your mind to do.

Some ways that you can more completely enjoy an engaged life include:

  • Choosing an activity or two every day that you genuinely enjoy doing.
  • Paying attention to how you use your time and whether you are allowing yourself to be distracted rather than focusing on things that are meaningful to you.
  • Going outdoors and listening to the sounds of the wind, birds, leaves rustling in the trees and heightening your awareness of what is happening around you.
  • Carving out twenty minutes today for reflection.
